SOUTHERN RIGHT
WHALE
Since 2000, the Organization for Cetaceans' Conservation – OCC (Uruguay) promotes awareness and educational programs for the effective conservation of the southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) and its coastal marine habitats in Maldonado and Rocha, Uruguay. OCC's actions have been declared of interest on numerous occasions, by UNESCO and Uruguay's DINAMA, MEC and MINTUR.

¿QUÉ ES LA RUTA DE LA BALLENA FRANCA EN COSTAS URUGUAYAS?
La Ruta de la Ballena Franca -RBF, impulsada desde 2002 es una estrategia de turismo responsable y como producto turístico incluye: Un circuito costero interpretativo en sitios estratégicos (faros, plataformas, elevaciones naturales), para la búsqueda y el avistaje de la Ballena Franca Austral y la biodiversidad marino-costera, entre Maldonado y Rocha. En acuerdos binacionales como municipios de Brasil se extenderá por Río Grande del Sur hasta Santa Catarina.

They come to our coasts for courtship, reproduction (fertilization and birth) and the raising of their calves.
WHALE HUNTing
It was the most hunted whale in the world (including Maldonado Bay from the 18th to the 20th century).

Its cousin is the Northern Right Whale (E.borealis), the most threatened whale on the planet (525 individuals).
